Lovely Bits…

I’m feeling so blessed and happy this morning. No single thing in particular is spurring this positive attitude; this happiness is more a result of a bunch of little positive bits of my life falling into place in such a lovely way!

I just have to share some of my favorite things for the week…

This is my wonderful husband and my precious 3-year-old son. They are my most cherished blessings and bring me the greatest fulfillment in life.

My husband ever patiently tolerates my seed beads all over the floor, pearls under his bare feet, and excessive trips to Michael’s with the sweetest of smiles on his face. I love him so…

My toddler brings me so much humility and reminds me everyday that my time is exponentially more important to him than any toy or gadget I could ever purchase. He is also the funniest kid ever… and I am totally objective in that statement ;-).

This is my chihuahua “Jack”, or as my son and I call him “Jackaroni”. He is the most quirky, ever patient, and endlessly faithful little dog I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I love that he follows me everywhere, seeks out my son to play with, and greets me with the greatest exuberance no matter how long or little I’ve been gone!

These are my new boxes for my jewelry line. I love the fresh colors and the way they compliment so many of the colors in my jewelry. I finally feel satisfied that I have a cohesive “brand” for my jewelry.

I love my Brazilian blend coffee and the deliciously aromatic smell it greets me with each morning….

I’m totally eating my words about Twitter. I stubbornly refused to sign up for it for the last year… I wish I had signed up a year ago! I’ve made some hilarious connections and new friends through my twitter and I’m so excited to see the continued rewards of this fun and simple networking site… (P.S. Follow me!www.twitter.com/uniquelyejwlry)

I love my Pandora (on my iPhone and on my laptop) because it gives me the greatest music selection ever! I adore the stations I have and am constantly surprised at how well it predicts what else I might like!

Valentines Day is approaching and all of the sappy, sugary, chocolaty, silly traditions that come with it. This year I’m going to mix it up a little bit and try something different. 1 Corinthians 13 is probably one of the most popular passages on love. It is used in thousands of poems, images, and songs and could probably be quoted to you by a surprising number of people.

“1 If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. 3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it;[a] but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance… 13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.”

Beginning on February 1st I am going to focus on loving my husband in the way each element describes. February 1st I’m going to love my husband patiently. I plan to demonstrate patience in everything I do, encourage him to be patient in everything that he does, and be grateful for the unending patience Christ has for me. Each day leading up to V-Day will bring a new idea to focus on.

Care to join me and share your experiences? 🙂

I am really terrible about updating this regularly… I find that I get a million inspirations for funny, inspiring, or creative blog posts that I can’t seem to narrow it down to one. I need to get my brain organized…

Hence the title of this blog post! Getting organized means I get to be more productive; mentally, physically, and creatively! In an effort to jump start this whole organization concept I cleaned out my closet last night. It was semi-painful and rather tragic, as I said goodbye to a boat load of clothes, shoes, purses, and accessories that I have been fighting getting rid of for some time… I totally lost the battle last night as I realized I couldn’t actually put away my clean laundry due to the disaster place I called my “closet”. So I took the whole “like a band aid” mentality and did it quick! It’s not really painless that way either though… 🙂

On to bigger and better things now (hopefully in the clothing department as well)….

I reorganized my work space and I’m very happy with it. I feel so prepared to create new and exciting designs!

Here are some photos of the transformation! I love seeing the work spaces of like minded individuals so please post links and photos in the comments section to share!

I was working on a project and everything got so insane that I thought I was going to have a panic attack if I didn’t get it under control!

I purchased some awesome “DIY” storage compartments from IKEA (to match my IKEA bookcases of course) to store all of the odds and ends that comes with jewelry creation. Here you can see that I had 2 stained black and the other 4 still were in their packaging here… These things, although so wonderful, took forever to build with their 8 billion pieces each! It was a bit of a love/hate process.

I finally got all of the mini drawer sets stained black and labeled everything. I’m a bit OCD sometimes so I actually sat on the floor and drew the bookcases to scale and moved everything around in my little drawing- combining art and organization is so fun! (I know, I already admitted that I’m OCD).

Yay for a 98% completed project! The bottom row features recycled diaper boxes (which we are almost done having to buy- yippy for potty training!) that have been re-covered in brown packing paper to look a bit better on the shelves. The pretty green boxes are all from my second home, Michaels, that I purchased during their 3 for $5 sale (that’s only 1.66 per box!!). Then you’ve got the lovely black drawer gizmos from Ikea, more boxes, some magazine organization and voila an organized space! The last item I need to complete is the chair- I did refinish the wood already (it’s an antique chair from the famous Hotel Del Coronado whoo hoo) but need to finish the re upholstery job on the seat. It will be so lovely when everything is all done. Now I get to have a big sigh of relief knowing everything is organized…. yikes that means I have no excuses for unproductive days anymore!

Now it’s on to re-arranging my Etsy shop for maximum aesthetics 🙂

New Year!

Here’s to a new year!

The last few days have been somewhat productive, especially considering Lucas and I have stayed in our pajamas until noon everyday. I actually listed new items in my Etsy shop (be sure to take a look), got caught up on some photos I needed to take, and improved some listings in my shop! I’m not sure “pajamas till noon everyday” was exactly what I had in mind for the start of 2010, but it was a nice self indulgent couple of days. On to bigger and better things starting tomorrow… or maybe the next day… depending on how much coffee I can get in me.

Anyway, I hope everyone else had a fantastic holiday season filled with family, friends, and anti-new year’s resolutions! My “resolution” this year was to not make a resolution. Why resolve myself to commit to something I know I won’t stick to, lower my confidence in my ability to follow through with something, and end up giving up on the whole idea in a few weeks time? Why not resolve to not resolve anything and just enjoy each day as it comes?

This year is going to bring some changes- big and small. I’m being more disciplined with my time (starting tomorrow or the next day remember?) in order to be more productive and get more things done each day. I’m going to apply more of myself to my classes because I’m paying for an education and I better get my money’s worth! I’m also spending more time being relaxed… by that I mean spending less time fretting over things I cannot change or control, wasting time on my computer doing unproductive things, and trying to force myself into being creative when it’s just not happening simply because I feel I “should” be being creative. I’ve had a few weeks off of school and some other obligations and I forgot how refreshing it is to wake up in the morning and know that my day is free to do whatever I want or need to get done! That refreshing feeling is something I want to experience on a weekly basis… hence the more disciplined days…starting tomorrow, or the next day.

Here’s to 2010!

After my entry yesterday (see Love- photo critique) I decided to officially take my designs in the direction of romance. I love the richness, the depth of the hues, the height of the elegance, and the level of luxury that I can portray through romantic jewelry designs. I think, no I know, that I am going to make this my focus. My logo, my “brand”, my photos, and even my packaging is going to go in this direction. I’m drawn to the elegance and the glamour that is in these new designs. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Give me your thoughts! You’re the first to see these new pieces. I have yet to put them in my Etsy store so enjoy the preview 😉

Love- Photo Critique!

On to Day 4!

I’m so ambitious, eager, overly excited, fearful, and stupidly forgetful today. (I hope stupidly is a word! If nothing else it fits in that sentence). I think it is all steming from my motivation to get going on this whole new concept of taking my jewelry to the next level. My husband asked me last night if I was ok after I dropped a Tupperware of soup on the floor, opened the refrigerator door into the open cabinet door beside it, and then proceeded to hit my head on the freezer when I jumped out of the way of the falling afore mentioned Tupperware…. (which stayed completely sealed by the way, whoo hoo for real tupperware) I then looked at him with curiosity as if I had no idea what he was talking about, “Of course I am ok. Why do you ask?”

Oh my sweet husband. I love him so much 🙂 Our 4 year anniversary is approaching so fast and I cannot believe it has already been 4 years. I still remember the first week of being married! What fun….

My devotional today was on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. I found it, once again, so applicable to what’s going on with me today. “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. Love is not rude, is not selfish, and does not get upset with others. Love does not count up wrongs that have been done. Love is not happy with evil but is happy with the truth. Love patiently accepts all things. It always trusts, always hopes, and always remains strong.” (I think it’s the Message version).

I think back to our wedding vows and the special message our Pastor gave on love. It is so easy to be the opposite of each of this verse’s attributes. Life gets busy and stressful and so often it’s those closest to us who bear the brunt of our groans and grumbles, poor attitudes and ungrateful spirit. I’m working on this especially today. Thinking of only loving things to say, encouraging words to speak, and kind actions I can make towards my husband especially but also to those around me….

How this relates to my jewelry- I’m branding myself a romantic!

I’m working on improving my product shots in preparation for a portfolio I want to design. I’m also really trying to determine what my “brand” is. The more I take stock of the inventory on hand and the supplies I have purchased to make new designs, the more I realize I want to go in a more romantic direction. That sounds like an oddly chosen word to describe my style but I’m finding more and more that I want to lean in the direction of statement pieces; designs that can truly bring “romance” to an outfit with rich color hues and bold techniques. Truly most of my work is not currently featured on my etsy shop as I’ve been fine tuning a lot of my designs. Cocktail rings, opera length necklaces, regal tones, and rich elements are soon to be featured… I think this means I need to re-think my logo. Now is the time to do it I suppose. Not a complete overhaul but maybe a shift in color is in order.

So on to the photos… Here is where you come in! Critique these photos and give me your best advice. As a buyer what are you looking for in a photo? Depth? Color? Detail? This is the direction I’d like to take my photos in and I’d love your input! These are unedited and fresh from the camera so there’s lot’s of room for improvement- I know. But hit me with your best shot so I can make improvements!

In the past I’ve taken all of my photos in a light box on a flat white surface. I’ve spent a lot of time researching photos recently and I find that in the handmade area people are looking for more personal, life-like, and real photos. Buyers want to see detail, they want to get a “feel” for the piece through the image. I’ve struggled with getting te right depth in my photos and have found that often times they produce flat and, although colorful, drab images. In this photo I’ve introduced a white object in the background just to give a sense of depth and visual interest? Did it work or do you dislike it?

In this photo I got up close and personal so you can see the detailing and the individual beads. What do you think?

I made this necklace last night and I have to say that it is particularly lovely. I’m only going to post a close up of it just to give a teaser. All of these pieces are being shown here first. This is just a sneak peek at the designs soon to be featured on my overhauled etsy shop! (Also coming soon are images of all of the jewelry being worn to give perspective and a true idea of what the piece looks like so stay tuned!)

I really love these. They are so feminine. They were a trial run and something I had never made before. Now that I love them I’m going to make them in richer hued beads for a more dramatic feel.

These are some of my favorite earrings. The crystal clear glass beads sparkle in any light. I just have to figure out how to capture that glitter…

Bring on the input- I’m a big girl and I can take it. Part of re-designing my entire jewelry business as a whole is determining what kind of photos grab the right attention. Feedback is always welcome and a great tool for me to adjust whatever needs adjusting.

Have a wonderful day!
